I have a terrible habit. I constantly find myself opening articles and headlines in my Facebook feed and then going back to my feed without reading the article, ending up with the iPhone version of a thousand tabs opened. I always tell myself, “I’ll read it before I go to sleep”, and then I don’t. Then I found Pocket.
Pocket is one of my favorite apps and probably my most used app after Pinterest. What is it?! A place to save an offline version of a cached website, an article, basically anything that has a URL, with the option to open the live site. It syncs with all your devices, including a web browser version at getpocket.com.
Here is how it works:
- Download Pocket or create an account at GetPocket.com- do not forget the GET part, you don’t want Pocket Rockets showing up in your browsing history at work.
- Create an account with your Google account (if you don’t already have a Google account, you’re behind the times).
- Open that Buzzfeed listicle you want to refer back to sometime
- Go to the Export arrow, scroll over to Pocket and select. If you don’t see the icon, go to More with the 3 dots and switch it on.
- Tag your articles for easy searching later on.

They’ve done some upgrades recently to incorporate a news aggregator and some social media aspects to give you a richer experience. I have enough social media, but if you were using in your classes to share articles with students, that would be pretty useful!
So there you go! Getting to saving and prepare to read offline articles any time. Just remember to sync or refresh before getting on that plane that doesn’t have wi-fi.
